NEXCO EAST Tohoku Regional Head Office (Aoba Ward, Sendai City) is installing snow tires on Expressway to promote safer driving and encourage early replacement of tires during the snow season. We will conduct a survey and announce the results.
We plan to conduct regular surveys until the winter tire installation rate improves, and we will inform you.
This survey has been conducted since 1998, and this is the 13th time this year.
1. Implementation of winter tire installation status survey

3. Reference data on snowfall and installation rate

Last year, there were 13 slip accidents on the snow-covered road surface on snowy days with snow (red circle in the above figure), 8 of which were summer tire car accidents. According to the winter tire survey at this time, the installation rate was 44%, and more than half of the customers on the Expressway that needed winter equipment were driving on snowy Expressway with summer tires.

(1) For a while after the snowfall that accompanies snowfall at the beginning of the season, slip accidents mainly caused by summer tire slips occur conspicuously.
(2) The rate of winter tire installation tends to improve after snowfall that accompanies snowfall.
(2) On snowy days with snow (red box in the above figure), 22 slip accidents occurred on snowy roads, 7 of which were summer tire car accidents.

4. Request from NEXCO EAST Tohoku Regional Head Office
(1) Please "install early winter tires before snowfall".
Every year, snowfall with snowfall at the beginning of the season causes a temporary increase in accidents caused by slipping summer tires. Slip accidents on the Expressway can lead to serious accidents and are extremely dangerous, so please change to winter tires as soon as possible.
(2) Please drive slowly and safely on snowy roads.
Even if you have winter tires installed, you should be careful on snowy roads. Please keep a sufficient distance between vehicles, keep the speed modest, do not operate sudden steering, sudden braking, etc., and drive slowly and safely. Also, the weather on the Expressway changes rapidly in winter, so please check the road information and weather information before and during your visit.
