Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Tohoku Regional Development Bureau and the East Expressway Co., Ltd. Tohoku Regional Head Office had been promoting the business jointly, National Highway No. 47 Sendai-Hokubu Road and opened an extension 6.6km between from Rifu Shirakashidai IC of Tomiya JCT.
With this opening, the Sanriku Transit Expressway and the Tohoku Transit Expressway will be connected to form a ring network of approximately 60km of motorways in the Sendai metropolitan area.
In addition, as an urban ring network (automobile road network that connects the entire outer area of the urban area), it will be the first line to be opened in all ordinance-designated urban areas nationwide.

Expected maintenance effects with completion of the ring network
- A high-speed transportation route that directly connects the industrial bases near Sendai and Sendai Shiogama Port will be completed and access will be strengthened.

- It is expected that the traffic congestion on general roads will be alleviated and that the traffic environment will be improved.
Outline of the open section of the Sendaibu Sendai-Hokubu Road
Sendai-Hokubu Road is a motorway with a total length of 13.5 km. In May 2002, 5.2 km from Rifu JCT to Rifu Shirakashidai IC is open.
With this opening, a ring network of motorways in the Sendai metropolitan area will be completed.
In addition, we are proceeding with the project for the full junction of Rifu JCT (a new ramp with the direction of Matsushima) in 2010, and for the 1.7km connection between Tomiya JCT and Route 4 to be completed in 2012.
Completion of the Sendai metropolitan ring network
With this opening, the Sanriku Transit Expressway and the Tohoku Transit Expressway will be connected, and together with the Sendai-Tobu Road and the Sendai-Nanbu Road, a ring network of automobile exclusive roads in the Sendai metropolitan area will be completed. (Around 60km)
This will ensure smooth distribution and introduction of traffic, alleviate traffic congestion on general roads, improve roadside environment, strengthen access to industrial and logistics bases, and secure alternative functions (improvement of redundancy) in case of disaster on Tohoku Expressway It is expected to be effective.
