On January 22, 2025, the Kanagawa Prefectural Police announced that they had arrested an individual on suspicion of violating the Road Transport Vehicle Act and the Road Improvement Special Measures Act for fraudulently avoiding paying tolls that should have been paid on the E83 Daisan-Keihin Road.
In this case, the suspect forced his way through the ETC lane at the toll booth with the license plate removed, thereby fraudulently avoiding paying the toll that he was supposed to pay.
NEXCO EAST Kanto Regional Head Office (Saitama City, Saitama Prefecture) has been taking measures such as installing cameras to monitor illegal passage so as not to damage customer trust in the toll road business. We believe that the arrest of a malicious perpetrator of illegal passage will help ensure fairness in toll burdens and deter illegal passage in the future.
In addition, for the illegal passage committed by the suspect in this case, we will confirm the toll amount and charge a surcharge (equivalent to twice the amount of the toll amount avoided) in addition to the toll amount illegally avoided.
We will continue to take a firm stance against illegal passage, actively cooperate with police investigations, and take measures to combat illegal passage.
