Three important themes this time! !!

  1. Be careful of rear-end collisions at the end of traffic jams!
  2. Turn on your headlights early and use your high beams!
  3. Prepare for winter early in case of sudden snowfall!

(1) Be careful of rear-end collisions at the back of traffic jams!

There are many serious accidents caused by rear-end collisions on Expressway.
In particular, when driving in traffic jams, pay attention to the slowing of the vehicle in front of you, keep a close eye on the road, and keep a sufficient distance from the vehicle in front so that you can slow down at any time.
When you are at the end of a traffic jam, please signal to the vehicle behind you early by using your hazard lights.
Also, operating or looking at a smartphone while driving is extremely dangerous!
Distracted driving is an extremely dangerous act that can prevent you from spotting dangers around you and lead to serious accidents, so you should never engage in distracted driving!

Traffic jams often occur during peak traffic periods such as tourist seasons. If you notice a traffic jam, be sure to brake early and use your hazard lights to alert those behind you.
Also, if you feel sleepy or tired, it is important to refresh yourself early at a rest facility.
If you are forced to stop due to an accident or other reason, please take note of the following points:

  1. I will never walk around
If you are forced to stop due to an accident or other reason, please do not walk around on the main road or shoulder.
Expressway are different from regular roads!
Never act in the same manner, move your car to the shoulder of the road immediately, and if it is not possible to move, give top priority to the following items:
  2. signal to following vehicle

    後続車の運転手が停止車両に気づいているとは限りません。
    後続車両に対する安全措置を執ってください。
    ①ハザードランプ点灯
    ②発炎筒を着火
    ③停止表示器材設置

  3. Evacuate to a safe place

All drivers and passengers should be aware of passing vehicles and take refuge in a safe place, such as outside the guardrail.
It is dangerous to stay in your car.

  4. Report after evacuating

Please report by dialing 110, an emergency telephone, or the road emergency hotline (#9910).
Emergency telephones are installed every 1 km on the main line and every 200 m in the tunnels.

    • The Road Emergency Dial can also be dialed from mobile phones.

(2) Turn on your headlights early and use high beams proactively!

Accidents occur frequently during rainy weather and at dusk. Turn on your lights early to let other vehicles know of your vehicle. If you cannot see 200 meters ahead, such as inside a tunnel, in dense fog, or on rainy days, please make sure to turn on your lights even during the day.
The low beam has a range of 40m and the high beam has a range of 100m. When driving on Expressway at night, as a general rule, turn your headlights upward so that you can spot cars that have stopped due to falling objects or traffic accidents as quickly as possible. However, when you are passing an oncoming vehicle or passing directly behind another vehicle, be sure to switch downwards frequently to avoid interfering with other vehicles.

(3) Prepare for winter early in case of sudden snowfall!

In winter, even if it is sunny at your starting point, it may be snowing at your destination or at a passing point. When driving on winter Expressway, please be sure to use winter tires such as studless tires and carry tire chains.
In addition, to ensure safe driving on winter Expressway, winter tire restrictions (restrictions on the installation of anti-skid devices) may be implemented. When winter tire restrictions are in place, cars that are not equipped with winter tires (such as studless tires) or anti-skid devices such as tire chains cannot be driven.
When driving on Expressway in winter, no matter where you live, you should not only use winter tires, but also carry tire chains with you in case of an emergency.
