December 25, 2013
East Nippon Expressway Co., Ltd.
Kanto Regional Head Office
NEXCO EAST Kanto Regional Head Office (Taito-ku, Tokyo) conducted a winter tire installation rate survey in mid-December at a rest facility in the area.
As a result, the winter tire installation rate was about 50% on average for all models, high for large vehicles (about 68%), and low for small vehicles (about 43%).
It seems that many people are heading to the snowfall areas, including the year-end and New Year holidays and returning home. Please wear early winter tires and carry a tire chain.
In addition, the installation rate tends to be particularly low at locations near the Tokyo metropolitan area (small vehicles 25.1%, large vehicles 62.3%). When roads are frozen or snow falls in the Tokyo metropolitan area, it is recommended that you refrain from unnecessary or urgent outings, or install winter tires just in case.
Survey location
Rest facilities near the metropolitan area (3 locations)
Miyoshi PA (Kan-Etsu Expressway), Hasuda SA (Tohoku Expressway), Moriya SA (Joban Expressway)
Rest facilities (6 locations) heading to the snowfall area
Kotobuki SA (Nagano Road), Yokogawa SA (Joshinetsu Road), Akagi Kogen SA (Kan-Etsu Expressway), Nasu Kogen SA (Tohoku Expressway), Otani PA (Tohoku Expressway), Nakago SA (Joban Expressway)
Investigation period
December 11th to 17th, 2013 (Number of surveys: 2,069 units)
Winter tire installation rate [rest facilities (9 locations) average]
- The route with the highest installation rate is Nagano Road, the lowest is Joban Expressway
- Small cars tend to be installed more often on holidays
- Large vehicles tend to have a high installation rate both on weekdays and on holidays.
- The proportion of small cars installed tends to be low at rest facilities near the Tokyo metropolitan area
Winter Expressway are slippery due to snowfall and freezing. Speed and handling like other seasons are very dangerous. In addition, even in the Tokyo metropolitan area, the entrances and exits of tunnels and bridges are liable to freeze, so be careful.
