NEXCO EAST Kanto Regional Head Office (Taito-ku, Tokyo) is working with the related organizations such as the Expressway Traffic Police Corps and the Expressway Traffic Safety Council to support customers who are heading to the snowfall area during the year-end and New Year holidays. We carry out "safety campaign".
The number of fatal accidents on Expressway within the Kanto Regional Head Office Office this year was 34 (*November 26, according to NEXCO EAST survey), exceeding the total number of accidents last year. I am.
In addition, heavy snowfall in the Tokyo metropolitan area in January of this year made it impossible to drive on Expressway, leaving many vehicles unattended, resulting in long-term suspension of traffic. In the winter traffic safety campaign, we encourage customers to install winter tires early.
In addition, in the campaign, "Tire Mu (μ)" where you can feel the difference between normal tires on winter ice and slipperiness for winter, safety awareness on snowy roads, patrol car (police / NEXCO) exhibition etc. are prepared. I will.

2 Frequent fatal accidents on Expressway!
As of November 26, 2013, the number of fatal accidents in the Kanto Regional Head Office Head Office was 34, the highest number in the past five years.

While driving, please note the following points and drive safely.
- Look ahead while driving! ⇒ Unlike Expressway run at speeds close to 100 kilometers. If you drive at 100 km/h, you can go up to 28 m per second, so even if you take your eyes off for a moment, it is dangerous. While driving, be aware of the situation ahead and try to drive safely.
- Leave plenty of space between cars! ⇒ The Expressway runs at a very fast speed. In order to drive safely, please keep a sufficient distance between you and the vehicle in front of you (interval).
- Watch your speed! ⇒ When you use the Expressway, you want to get to your destination quickly, and you speed up without knowing it. Expressway, please follow the legal speed and drive safely.
- Take an early break! ⇒ If you are driving on a Expressway, you may feel drowsiness and tiredness as the scenery flows. Driving with drowsiness or tiredness can lead to a serious accident, so be sure to take an early break without overdoing it.
[To prevent human-to-vehicle accidents! ]
If you have stopped on the Expressway main line due to a breakdown, please take the following actions.
- Never walk around! ⇒ Expressway are different from ordinary roads! Behavior with the same feeling is very dangerous!
- Signal a following car! ⇒Take safety measures for the following vehicles with a set of 3 items: hazard lamp, flaming cylinder, and stop indicator.
- Evacuation! ⇒Everyone on board should evacuate to a safe place such as the outside of the guardrail, while paying attention to the passing vehicles. It is very dangerous to wait in the car or near the car.
- Report! ⇒Please report the accident or breakdown by dialing 110, emergency telephone, or road emergency dial ( # 9910 ).
3 Wear early winter equipment before it snows!
Winter Expressway are slippery due to snowfall and freezing. Driving at the same speed and handling as in other seasons is extremely dangerous. Even in the metropolitan area where there is little snow, it is easy to freeze the entrances and exits of tunnels and bridges, so be careful.
In addition, the braking distance of summer tires on snowy roads is 1.6 times that of winter tires. To protect the safety of our customers, we ask that you wear winter tires and carry tire chains as soon as possible.

4 Conduct a winter tire installation rate survey
We will carry out a winter tire installation rate survey in the middle of December at a rest facility within the Kanto Regional Head Office. The results will be announced on our website. Customers heading to the snowfall area are advised to install winter tires as soon as possible.

5 Request from NEXCO East Japan
On a Expressway winter, keep the distance between cars sufficiently low and keep the speed down. Do not perform operations such as "steering wheel", "accelerating acceleration", "quick braking", etc., and drive slowly and safely. I will.
In winter, the starting point may be sunny, but snow may be falling at the destination or the passing point, so be sure to check the weather information in advance and prepare for safety.
