NEXCO EAST Hokkaido Regional Head Office (Sapporo City Atsubetsu-ku) has summarized traffic jam prediction and traffic jam countermeasures on Expressway in Hokkaido during the Obon period (August 8 (Thu) to 18 (Sun) 11 days).

Please refer to this traffic jam forecast and adjust your departure time to help create a comfortable travel plan that avoids peak traffic jams. Also, please be sure to check the latest traffic information before departure, as the actual traffic congestion may differ from the forecast due to accidents or weather.

1 Congestion prediction

(1) Number of traffic jams (Refer to Attachment 1 for all traffic jam / congestion forecasts [PDF: 314KB])
This year's Obon festival is expected to have the most traffic jams on August 12th (holiday / Monday) and 13th (Tuesday).​
It is expected that the traffic congestion and congestion will be about the same as the previous year.

* Congestion ... A state in which a train that continues at low speed or stops and starts at a speed of 1km or more and 15 minutes or more and a speed of 40km or less continues

2 Requests for using Expressway

1. Please use the traffic jam prediction information and shift the predicted peak day and time of traffic jam to avoid traffic jams.
2. Please keep a sufficient distance between cars in a traffic jam area and drive at a safe speed. If you feel tired, don't overdo it and try to take an early break at the rest facility.
3. In order to prevent a rear-end collision in a traffic jam section, if you confirm a traffic jam ahead, please cooperate with us by turning on the hazard lamp and signaling the following vehicle.
4. Road traffic conditions may change significantly due to accidents and weather. Please check the latest traffic information before departure.

3 Congestion and congestion measures

We will implement the following measures as a measure against congestion and congestion during the Obon period.

• Providing traffic congestion information and warnings using marked vehicles and road information boards at major traffic congestion points and at the end of traffic congestion
• Calling attention to speed reduction in some tunnels and increasing illumination of tunnel lighting
• Placement of parking lot organizers at rest facilities

ETC holiday discounts (local areas) are applied during the Obon period on August 10th (Sat), 11th (Sun), 12th (Mon), 17th (Sat), and 18th (Sun).
