NEXCO EAST Hokkaido Regional Head Office (Sapporo City Atsubetsu-ku) has summarized the congestion forecast and its countermeasures during the Golden Week period [April 26-May 6] due to traffic concentration on Expressway in Hokkaido.
Congestion forecast
This congestion forecast is based on the traffic conditions during the past GW period and Obon period.
- We expect peak congestion on May 3rd (Friday, National Holiday).
- Congestion is predicted at the following three locations.
- Prediction of 5km of traffic between Kitahiroshima IC and Eniwa IC (direction Chitose) on May 3 (Friday, national holiday)
- Predict 1km of traffic congestion at Kitahiroshima IC exit (Sapporo direction) from May 3 (Friday, national holiday) to May 5 (Sunday, national holiday)
- At the Onuma Park Main Line Toll Gate (to Hakodate) of the Doo Expressway terminal extended in November 2012
Predict traffic congestion of 2km on May 3 (Friday, national holiday) and 1km on May 4th (Saturday, national holiday) and 5th (Sunday, national holiday)
Congestion measures
Regarding congestion measures during the Golden Week period, we plan to implement the following measures.
- Providing traffic congestion information and warnings for rear-end collisions by using labeled vehicles at the end of traffic congestion
- Arrangement of parking lot organizers and provision of temporary toilets at rest facilities
When using the Expressway
- During Golden Week, it may still snow and the road may freeze. We recommend that you wear winter tires after checking the weather information to your destination in advance.
- Excessive speed will cause an accident. Please keep a sufficient distance between cars and drive at a safe speed suitable for the road conditions. If you feel tired, don't overdo it and try to take an early break at the rest facility.
