NEXCO EAST Hokkaido Regional Head Office (Sapporo City Atsubetsu-ku) is due to traffic concentration on Expressway in Hokkaido during Obon period [Wednesday, August 8, 2012-Sunday, August 19, 2012: 12 days] We have summarized congestion prediction and countermeasures.
Prediction of congestion
This congestion forecast is based on the traffic conditions during the past Bon Festival and this year's Golden Week. (Attachment 1 [PDF: 52KB] reference)
- Sunday, August 12 is expected to be the peak hour of congestion.
- The Hokkaido Expressway forecasts a maximum of 10km of traffic between Eniwa IC and Kitahiroshima IC (direction Tomakomai) on Sunday, August 12, and 2km of traffic at the exit of Kitahiroshima IC (direction Sapporo).
- The Futaru Expressway predicts a 2km to 3km traffic jam at the Asari Main Line Toll Gate (direction Otaru).
- Doto Expressway is expected to experience congestion and congestion in both Sapporo and Obihiro due to the opening of the Yubari IC to Shimukappu IC in October last year. In particular, the Shimukappu PA is expected to be crowded during the Bon Festival, so please use a rest facility in front of you, such as Yuni PA.
Congestion measures
Regarding congestion measures during the Obon period, we plan to implement the following measures. (Attachment 2 [PDF: 127KB] reference)
- Providing traffic congestion information for main lines and congestion information for rest facilities
- Arrangement of parking lot organizers and provision of temporary toilets at rest facilities
- Please use this congestion forecast to avoid congestion, such as shifting the customer's use date and departure time before and after the estimated time of occurrence of traffic congestion.
Please be sure to check the latest road traffic information before departure, as the traffic conditions may change significantly due to accidents and weather. - There are a lot of fatal accidents at Expressway.
Accelerating too much speed may cause an accident, so make sure to keep a sufficient distance between vehicles, and be careful of speed signs, and drive at a safe speed that is suitable for the road conditions.
