NEXCO EAST Japan Kanto Regional Head Office (Saitama City, Saitama Prefecture) is working jointly with related organizations such as Expressway Traffic Police Force and Expressway Traffic Safety Council to support customers returning to their hometowns during the year-end and New Year holidays and those heading to snowy areas. We will be holding a "Winter Traffic Safety Campaign" in service areas within our jurisdiction.
In this winter's traffic safety campaign, we will distribute educational pamphlets on traffic safety and driving manners to customers using Expressway, and display patrol cars and fallen objects.

Three important themes this time! !!
- Stopped vehicle collision accidents involving vehicles that have stopped due to accidents or breakdowns are on the rise.
Find out what to do in case of an emergency. - Turn on your headlights early and use your high beams!
- Prepare for winter early in case of sudden snowfall.
(1) The number of stationary vehicle accidents involving vehicles that have stopped due to accidents or breakdowns is increasing.
Find out what to do in case of an emergency.
A stopped vehicle collision is an accident in which a following vehicle collides with a vehicle that has stopped due to an accident or breakdown, or at the end of a traffic jam. Make sure you know what to do in case of an emergency.
A request to the driver of the vehicle that has stopped
-
never walk around
If you have no choice but to stop due to an accident, please do not walk around the main road or shoulder.
Expressway are different from ordinary roads!
Never act in the same way, move your car to the side of the road as soon as possible, and if it is impossible to move, give top priority to the following items. -
signal to following vehicle
The driver of the vehicle behind you may not be aware of the stopped vehicle.
Take safety measures for following vehicles.
① Hazard lamp lighting
② Ignite the flare
③ Installation of stop display equipment -
Evacuate to a safe place
All drivers and passengers should pay close attention to passing vehicles and wait in a safe place such as outside the guardrail.
Staying in your car is dangerous. -
Report after evacuating
110/emergency phone/road emergency dial (#9910) etc. to report!
Emergency telephones are installed every 1km on the main line and every 200m inside tunnels.
*You can also call the road emergency number from your mobile phone.
Requests to those driving (following vehicles)
-
Danger prediction
When you discover a stopped vehicle, there may be people nearby or in the shadows.
Always anticipate that people may appear and be prepared for any possible danger! -
Information catch
Information on road abnormalities will be provided via road traffic information boards, highway radio, etc.
If you receive information such as ``an accident ahead'' or ``a broken down vehicle'', drive at a moderate speed and be very careful. -
Be careful at the end of the traffic jam! Take an early break
Traffic jams often occur during traffic congestion periods such as the Koraku season.
If you find a traffic jam, don't forget to brake early and turn on the hazard lamps to alert the rear!
(2) Turn on your headlights early and use high beams proactively!
Accidents occur frequently during rainy weather and at dusk. Turn on your lights early to let other vehicles know of your vehicle. If you cannot see 200 meters ahead, such as inside a tunnel, in dense fog, or on rainy days, please make sure to turn on your lights even during the day.
The low beam has a range of 40m and the high beam has a range of 100m. When driving on Expressway at night, as a general rule, turn your headlights upward so that you can spot cars that have stopped due to falling objects or traffic accidents as quickly as possible. However, when you are passing an oncoming vehicle or passing directly behind another vehicle, be sure to switch downwards frequently to avoid interfering with other vehicles.
(3) Prepare for winter early in case of sudden snowfall.
In winter, even if it's sunny at your departure point, it may be snowing at your destination or transit point. When riding Expressway in winter, please wear winter tires such as studless tires and carry tire chains.
In addition, winter tire regulations (restrictions on the installation of anti-skid devices) may be implemented to ensure safe driving on Expressway in winter. If winter tire regulations are in place, vehicles that are not equipped with winter tires (such as studless tires) or anti-slip devices such as tire chains cannot be driven.
When driving Expressway in winter, regardless of where you live, be sure to wear winter tires and always carry tire chains in case of an emergency.
NEXCO EAST Group positions the period from 2021 to 2025 as "a period in which we will contribute to the achievement of the SDGs and transform towards a new future society," and we are undertaking various initiatives.
We believe that the efforts of this "Winter Traffic Safety Campaign" will contribute to SDG goal number 3 as a business activity that will lead to the reduction of traffic fatalities and injuries.
