NEXCO EAST Kanto Regional Head Office (Saitama City, Saitama Prefecture) conducted its second winter tire installation survey of the year on January 8 (Wed.) and 12 (Sun.) at rest facilities in its jurisdiction to encourage safe driving on snow-covered roads.
The average winter tire installation rate was 62.2% for light vehicles, 94.3% for heavy vehicles, and 74.4% for all vehicle types. Compared to the previous survey (2024 conducted on December 4 (Wed.) and 8 (Sun.), the installation rate increased, but approximately 40% of small cars were not equipped with tires. (See Exhibit-1 [PDF: 265KB] for details of the survey)

It is against the law to drive on snowy or frozen roads with normal tires.
In addition, even in the metropolitan area where it usually does not snow, roads may freeze and snow may fall.

If even one vehicle becomes unable to drive on an Expressway, it can lead to long periods of congestion and road closures. On snowy or icy roads, please use winter tires marked with studless (domestic) or snowflake marks (international), carry tire chains, and check the latest weather forecasts and road information to ensure a safe drive. (See Appendix 2 [PDF: 482KB])

NEXCO EAST Group has positioned the period from 2021 to 2025 as a period for contributing to the achievement of the SDGs and transforming toward a new future society, and is undertaking various initiatives during this period.
We believe that this "Winter Tire Installation Status Survey" initiative will contribute to SDG goal number 3 as a business activity that leads to reducing traffic fatalities and injuries.
