Concept of name
In order to enable users of the smart interchange to clearly distinguish that it is an ETC-only smart interchange and that it is an entrance/exit that connects to Tsukuba City, the name of the municipality, "Tsukuba City," has been used, and because Tsukuba Chuo Interchange is already located within the city, the name of the municipality has been added with "Nishi" (West) after the name to clearly distinguish the interchange, making it "Tsukuba Nishi Smart Interchange."
Background to the name decision
The name was decided upon through deliberations by the "Tsukuba Smart Interchange District Council (tentative name)," which is made up of Tsukuba City and other organizations, and was based on a draft name that was decided based on the opinions of the Road Sign Optimization Committee, which is made up of road managers and others in Ibaraki Prefecture, and was then decided upon through the prescribed procedures of the Japan Expressway Holding and Debt Repayment Corporation.
