East Nippon Expressway Co., Ltd.
Niigata Regional Head Office

NEXCO EAST Niigata Regional Head Office (Chuo-ku, Niigata City) will operate Expressway in Niigata Prefecture during the year-end and New Year period [8 days from December 28, 2020 (Wednesday) to January 4, 2020 (Wednesday)], it is predicted that there will be no congestion of 5 km or more due to traffic concentration. However, during the year-end and New Year period, the E17 Kan-Etsu Expressway Yuzawa Yuzawa Interchange (IC) may be congested (less than 1km) by skiers, etc., so please pay attention to the distance between vehicles. Please use it.
In addition, Expressway traffic conditions change significantly in winter due to sudden changes in weather, accidents, and broken-down cars. Please leave with plenty of time to spare. When you go out, please make sure that you have winter equipment such as winter tires and drive safely.
In case of heavy snow, please refrain from going out unless it is absolutely necessary. If you have no choice but to go out, you may be required to wear chains even if you have winter tires, so please do not forget to carry chains.
Also, if you drive with snow piled high on the roof of your car, it may fall while driving on the Expressway and the car behind you may run over it. Avoiding snow masses can lead to accidents, so please remove the snow from the roof of your car before driving.

1. Congestion at Yuzawa IC

During the year-end and New Year period (*1), the Yuzawa IC on the Kan-Kan-Etsu Expressway may be crowded with customers skiing. Sudden braking on winter roads is extremely dangerous, so please be careful of the distance between vehicles.

2. Request for safe driving

  1. The number of accidents on Expressway in Niigata Prefecture in winter tends to be higher than in other months.
When you go out, please make sure that you have winter equipment such as winter tires and drive safely. Please keep a safe distance between vehicles, and drive safely without performing operations with the word "sudden" such as "sudden acceleration, sudden steering, or sudden braking."
Also, stacks are more likely to occur during snowfall. NEXCO EAST official YouTube introduces the mechanism of stacking and how to prevent stacking, so please take a look at it as a reference for safe driving.

  3. When using Expressway, please be sure to wear winter tires and carry tire chains.
In some cases, we may instruct you to use chains at rest facilities, and in the case of heavy snow, you may be required to use chains even if you have winter tires (*2).
When driving on winter roads, make sure that the tread depth of the vehicle tires is not worn down to 50% less than when new.

(*2)
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has designated chain-restricted sections that require all vehicles to wear tire chains on Expressway and national roads where there is concern that vehicles will be unable to drive during unusual snowfalls such as heavy snow warnings and emergency announcements of heavy snow. increase.
The chain regulation section on the Expressway in Niigata Prefecture is between the Joshin-Etsu Expressway (In-bound line) Arai Arai Smart IC and Shinanomachi Shinanomachi IC.

3. Request for cooperation in snow removal work

Snow removal work on Expressway is carried out at a low speed of 50 km/h or less while temporarily blocking lanes, as it is necessary to ensure the safety of driving customers. In addition to work aimed at checking the road surface conditions even on fine days, we may carry out work to spray antifreeze to prevent the road from freezing. These operations are important for customers to use Expressway safely. If you encounter such work while driving, ensure sufficient distance between the vehicle and the work vehicle, and avoid dangerous actions such as overtaking.
