NEXCO EAST Nagano Construction Office (Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture) is carrying out In-bound work on the aging Akarusan Tunnel on the E18 Joshin-Etsu Expressway (hereinafter "Joshinetsu Expressway") between Saku Interchange (hereinafter "IC") and Usui Karuizawa IC. We would like to inform you that the nighttime road closure period for construction work announced on February 1 2024 will be changed as follows due to bad weather.

1. Construction outline of tunnel reinforcement work

Tunnel reinforcement work will be carried out at the Akaryuzan Tunnel, located on the Joshinetsu Expressway's In-bound lane between Saku IC and Usui Karuizawa IC, to prevent uplift and damage to the road surface caused by expansion of the ground around the tunnel. 2024, Monday, April 1, 2020 will close the road overnight to allow for the assembly and dismantling of excavation machinery.

Main work contents

In order to create a stronger ring-shaped structure for the tunnel, which is subject to excessive force from around the tunnel, concrete (invert) will be installed to improve stability. Specifically, after the road surface is excavated, an invert will be installed to reinforce the tunnel bottom, and then paving work will be carried out to restore the road to a drivable road.

• Invert is to connect the bottom of the tunnel to the reverse arch with concrete, which increases the yield strength and prevents subsidence and deformation.
