In commemoration of Tire Day (April 8th), we will jointly raise awareness with related organizations such as the Japan Automobile Tire Association, and will encourage customers through free tire pressure checks, traffic safety quizzes, and distribution of novelty items. We call on you to prevent wheel derailment accidents!

[Request for measures to prevent wheels from coming off when changing tires]
The harsh winter has passed and spring has arrived. Change from studless tires to normal tires according to road conditions! Studless tires are made of softer rubber than normal tires, so if you drive them in the rain, there is a risk of them slipping or reducing the effectiveness of the brakes. Please drive safely with tires that match the season!
Additionally, tires are more likely to come off when it's time to change tires. If a tire derails while driving on Expressway, not only the derailed vehicle but also the derailed tire may come into contact with another vehicle, or if it flies off within the construction regulations, it may fall within the regulations. workers are also at risk. We ask for your cooperation in checking that the nuts are not loosely tightened and replenishing the air pressure in the replaced tires to prevent wheel derailment accidents and tire bursts.

3. NEXCO EAST Hokkaido Regional Head Office Spring National Traffic Safety Campaign Key Points

  1. Check the loading status and inspect the tires to prevent falling objects and wheels from falling off!

When spring comes, traffic volume increases, and along with that, the number of fallen objects Expressway tends to increase as well. If a vehicle behind you collides with a falling object on Expressway, it can lead to a serious accident. For this reason, traffic control teams are risking their lives to recover the vehicles in spaces where they are traveling at speeds of 100km/h.
In April last year, the traffic control team recovered approximately 1,000 fallen objects, of which 18 were tires. (The top items that fell were: (1) plastics and vinyl such as vinyl sheets, (2) automobile parts such as tires and bumpers, and (3) wood and cloth such as square lumber and blankets).
When riding in a car, be sure to check the loading status to prevent falling objects, and when changing tires, check the nuts and air pressure to prevent wheels from falling off or tire bursts. With your small efforts, you can help ensure road safety. Let's protect it.

  2. Be careful of looking aside! Concentrate on the road ahead while driving!

On Expressway, a moment of inattention can lead to a serious accident. In the jurisdiction of our Hokkaido Regional Head Office, there has been an increase in accidents involving wire ropes caused by looking aside or not looking ahead on temporary two-lane sections such as Doto Expressway.
When you're driving, you tend to keep an eye on your smartphone or car navigation system, but...if you're driving at 100km/h, your vehicle will travel about 28m if you take your eyes off it for just one second.
Look forward and concentrate while driving!

  3. Fasten seat belts and child restraints in all seats, including the rear seats.

The fatality rate for people not wearing seatbelts in traffic accidents on Expressway is about 17 times that of people wearing seatbelts! (Research by Traffic Accident Comprehensive Analysis Center, Public Interest Incorporated Foundation, 2021)
However, the seatbelt wearing rate on Expressway is 99.6% for drivers and 78.7% for rear seats, which is still lower than that for drivers. (Research by National Police Agency/JAF in 2020)
To protect loved ones and precious lives, please always wear seat belts not only in the driver's and passenger's seats, but also in all seats, including the rear seats, and be sure to use child seats for small children!
